Detail: First in Tingchow during the Five Dynasties [907 to 960] and later during the Sung Dynasty [960 to 1297], workers hardened translucent white non-porous clay to a smooth finish {porcelain, Ting}. Pai Ting (White Ting) is best. Tu Ting (Earth Ting) has cream-white glaze. Fen Ting (Flour Ting) is lowest. Nan Ting (Southern Ting) has same gradations. Kuan is royal porcelain. Yuan, Ming, Ching, and Sung porcelain are of equal value. Kiln gloss decreases over time.
