Varnish can use resin secreted by insect that lives in acacia trees, which dissolves in alcohol {shellac}. Varnish can use cellulose compound in solvent {lacquer}. Varnish can use tree sap in solvent {Oriental lacquer}, which hardens only in high humidity in the dark. Many coats give lustrous, hard finish.
