Detail: Polynesians settled by a lagoon in north Tongatapu, the largest island. Tui Tonga dynasty, of Mu'a district in northeast Tongatapu, ruled and built ceremonial center at Mu'a [1400]. It had ditch and bank enclosing platforms with houses for chief families and their servants. Few Polynesian societies had classes. At ceremonies, root-based kava drink caused drowsiness. New dynasty ruled [1500]. Later, Tui Kanokupolu dynasty ruled, as it does now.
