With more activity, number of synapses per neuron increases, synapse density per unit volume rises, and dendrite length increases. Neuroactive compounds exert influence up to 20 nanometers within synaptic cleft or up to 2 millimeters from varicosities or unstructured release points [Gray, 1977].
